History The Early Years

The earliest match we have managed to trace back for Knighton Cricket Club is way back to Friday 23rd September 1859, when Knighton played Presteigne at Knighton, however we are not sure whether it was at the current Bryn-y-Castell ground, or what year the Knighton Cricket Club was formed. Below is a copy of the actual score card for the game.

Presteigne won by an innings and 9 runs. We know there was a return match against Presteigne on Saturday 15th October 1859, score unknown.

On Saturday August 4th 1860 Knighton played against Brampton Bryan and Bucknell in a field at Brampton Bryan, kindly lent for the occasion by F. Edwards Esq., of the Farm. The game commenced at 1.30 pm and was decided by the first innings, the late arrival of the Knightonians preventing the completion of the game. Some capital batting was exhibited; that of Messrs A Edwards, R Edwards, R Walkey, W Hughes and P C Morton for the respective sides deservedly praised. Mr Walkey managed to score a six by a splendid square leg hit, which sent the ball into the adjoining field. After the game was terminated the players partook of a good cold luncheon prepared by Mrs Ireland of the Oxford Arms Inn and then separated with the intention of trying their skill again in a return match at Knighton. Final scores Knighton 79 Brampton Bryan and Bucknell 101.

Knighton's lowest ever total in one Innings is 14 all out vs Presteigne in a match played on Saturday 16th August 1862 in a match in which both teams played 2 innings with Knighton's final total being 39 and Presteigne's being 70. The Knighton team that day was a young side that turned up so not to disappoint the Presteigne gentlemen as some older players were unable to attend.

A match was played between Knighton and Ludlow on a Thursday night at Knighton cricket ground, Mr Joseph Brown's eleven (of Knighton) and Mr Merrick's (of Ludlow) Eleven. Score is unknown but we do know they had a sumptuous dinner courtesy of Misses Tudge the month of September 1862.
